Air-Tan FAQs

Learn more about our partner, Air-Tan, in their guest blog! The downtown Air-Tan is located inside of MDG Salon at 355 Indiana Avenue.

If you are thinking about coming to Air-Tan for the first time, it can be an exciting experience, but it can also come with a lot of questions. Our friendly, trained technicians are always here to answer any of your questions, but here are some of the questions we get asked the most:

What should I do before I come in?

Prior to your tan, you want to shower, shave, and exfoliate. It doesn’t have to be immediately before you come in, but you don’t want to do it any sooner than the evening before. You can use our Air-Tan Body Scrub for best results. If you have spray tanned or used any self tanner recently, be sure to scrub off any remaining tan, as well. You also do not want to apply lotions, deodorants, or oils. This will create a barrier between your skin and the tanning solution.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Be sure to wear something loose fitting and dark. You don’t want anything that will be tight on your body post-tan. Yoga pants and tights are the biggest offenders.  Flip-flops or sandals are best for your feet as long as it’s not wet out.  For rainy weather, wear loose shoes that cover your feet, and don’t forget an umbrella!

What should I wear DURING my appointment?

While you are being tanned, everyone is required to wear bottoms. You can wear your own underwear or bikini bottoms, or we do provide a disposable thong for women free of charge. We ask that men bring their own bottoms—these can be underwear of any type or gym shorts. Most people do go topless, but feel free to wear whatever makes you comfortable.  Do keep in mind any tan lines your top may leave behind.

Can I get my hair done after my appointment? Can I get waxed or a manicure after my appointment?

It is highly recommended that your Air-Tan be the last step to your beauty routine. This is because you need to avoid getting wet for 6-8 hours after your Air-Tan, and there is always a chance that your forehead or neck may get wet when your hair is being washed. Getting a manicure or pedicure can speed up the exfoliation process of your Air-Tanned skin if exfoliating scrubs or hot towels are used.  Also, waxing will remove any Air-Tan in that area, which does not make for a good look!
