Lifesaving [hair] Tidbits

by: Dana Weimer

Okay, so maybe this list won’t serve as a life preserver, but it will make you think twice before blasting your hair with heat, or over-conditioning with a masque on your head as a part of your nightly regime. Hang tight, there are only 10 tips – Enjoy!

1.) Some say to use a paper towel to grab as much moisture as possible from wet hair, but lets get real: use your towel to squeeze your dry hair – the idea is to soak up as much moisture as possible before applying heat! If you have the time, let your hair air dry as long as possible.

2.) Spray your bobbie pins with a dry shampoo to create friction & extra gripping power to hold your updos & styles.

3.) Is build-up an issue? Remember Sea Breeze Astringent? It’s still available and still so worth it! Apply the astringent on a cotton ball and then directly to your scalp to breakup the build-up! Do this once a week and you’ll notice a difference in no time!

4.) Give yourself a great shampoo (concentrating on your scalp) BEFORE your color appointment. A clean canvas is the best canvas!

5.) “I want bangs today.” Never TELL your stylist this. SHOW them what you are referring to! Bring in a picture so you can both envision the same idea.

6.) Turn up the heat! Most “volumizers” are heat-activated. Be sure to aim toward your roots with your hot tools to get that extra oomph.

7.) Don’t over-protein. Less is more is most likely the motto. This holds true for deep conditioning and additional treatments. Your hair only allows so much to penetrate. Too much protein = buildup + breakage… which means you are right back at square one! Easy does it. Once you get on track, a bi-monthly application should do the trick. Most can push it to every 3-4 weeks.

8.) We all have our own modification of a Teasing Brush, which really do exist – but if you’re in a jam and need one in a pinch – open a new toothbrush. Stiff, coarse bristles are the foundation of a great tease!

9.) Rinse with COLD water. I’ve said it more than once by now in my blogs, and I’m certainly not the first person to stand firm behind this so-called myth. Cold water helps fight frizz by sealing the hair cuticle and making it more difficult for moisture to enter the follicle.

10.) Grab the dryer sheets! Flatten those pesky fly-aways with a dryer sheet! Or, even easier – smooth your freshly lotioned hands through your hair and whala! If those fly-aways aren’t going anywhere, maybe its time for an investment. Oribe Gold Lust and Kérastase Oleo-Relax Serum are here to save the day… the best thing: we have more in the battlefield (our retail shelves), those are just 2 of the 15 other taming possibilities!
